SUMMARY:Phila - Exploring Civil Rights History teacher workshop
DESCRIPTION:Phila –  Civil Rights History teacher workshop: Philadelphia Antebellum Black Metropolis. (ZOOM)\n\n\nExplore new primary source sets illuminating 19th-century Black civil rights from the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Library of Congress. Showing how ideas and news shaped Black communities across the nation\, this two-part workshop helps educators dive into the related records. It also equips participants with research skills to uncover local stories of activism\, while demonstrating how these source sets can spark deeper civic learning. \n\nWorkshop host: \nDr. Stephanie Tisdale \nDr. Tisdale served as the primary researcher and curriculum writer for History at the Routes. She teaches at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and previously served as the regional director of the Center for Black Educator Development. \n\nPresenter: Michiko Quinones\, “The Philadelphia Antebellum Black Metropolis”\nMichiko Quinones is a public historian and museum docent who co-founded the 1838 Black Metropolis\, an award-winning project dedicated to uncovering and sharing the stories of Philadelphia’s free Black community in the antebellum period. She holds a BA in African American Studies and Government from the University of Maryland–College Park and completed a Master’s in Museum Studies at Harvard University. With over a decade of experience volunteering in Philadelphia museums\, Ms. Quinones works to make hidden histories visible—through interactive walking tours\, digital archives\, online exhibitions\, curriculum materials\, and community education.
