SUMMARY:Caledonia State Park: Thaddeus Stevens Blacksmith Shop
DESCRIPTION:Thaddeus Stevens was NOT a blacksmith. He owned the 10\,000 acres that comprised Caledonia Ironworks. As a leading abolitionist\, he advocated for the end of slavery\, and it is suspected his Caledonia Ironworks was used as a conduit for the Underground Railroad. In June\, 1863 the Army of Northern Virginia marched north into Chambersburg\, and then turned east on route 30\, heading towards an unknown and insignificant town of Gettysburg. On route\, Confederal General Jubal Early burned the village of Caledonia in retaliation for Stevens’ anti-slavery views. In Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film “Lincoln”\, Thaddeus Stevens is played by the actor Tommy Lee Jones. Come learn the forgotten and neglected history of Thaddeus Stevens and Caledonia Ironworks.

SUMMARY:Multi-State Freedom Walk 2026 in PA - retracing Freedom Seekers route to Canada
DESCRIPTION:#FreedomWalk2026 \nA major 250th-anniversary commemoration led by the Menare Foundation\, this 8-week\, 750-mile journey retraces Underground Railroad routes from Maryland to Canada.  The project includes stops in Pennsylvania  (with an overnight “station” in Philadelphia) and will feature community activations such as lectures\, tours\, service projects\, and opportunities for the public to participate. It is positioned as both a historical pilgrimage and a modern call to reflection and engagement. It will be stopping in PA at the Old Kennett Meeting House\, 1109 East Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square on May 18\, departing on the 20th. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe 750-mile pilgrimage\, following 19th-century routes to freedom\, will commemorate the brave self-liberators\, the abolitionists\, and their secret networks\, during the 250th anniversary of American independence. The journey will draw upon the legacy and achievements of previous generations to galvanize modern activists to work toward truth-telling and transformation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n#FreedomWalk2026 envisions a nation where America’s unfinished story is completed to form a more just and perfect union. Uniting past and present we seek to re-ignite the ideals of “We the People”—sparking inspiration for future generations to secure equity\, justice\, and liberation for all. \nIt arrives late afternoon May 18th and is scheduled to leave on Wednesday the 20th in the early morning and may be gone if you wait. SUMMARY:Lancaster: Live & Learn Series 2026 - The William Whipper Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:Lancaster Live & Learn Series 2026 – The William Whipper Reading Circle\n\n\n\n\n\nLancaster Public Library\, 151 N Queen St\, Lancaster\, PA 17603\, USA\n\n\nAbout the event \n\n\n\nThe Commonwealth MonIn honor of the late Lenwood “Leni” Sloan of Lancaster\, known and revered as an historian\, cultural steward and self-described “catalytic agent\,” the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and the Lancaster Public Library will continue to host and support the series of free public events Sloan organized last year before his unexpected passing. Titled “Lancaster Live & Learn: Animating Democracy 2026 —The William Whipper Reading Circle\,” the overall series has been named in honor of William Whipper (1804-1876)\, the noted 19th century entrepreneur from Columbia\, Lancaster County who rose to national prominence as an author and an activist who advocated for Black civil rights and was a conductor of the secretive work of the Underground Railroad \nAccording to an outline Leni Sloan prepared for this series\, William Whipper began the reading circle in his Philadelphia home to bring together thought leaders and change agents. Each meeting explored current and relevant literature and oration as blueprints to achieving democracy. “We’ll use the elocution of these 19th century African American leaders as blueprints for civic dialogue about the current struggle to achieve “liberty and justice for all\,” Sloan wrote in 2025. \nMay 12 – DR. SUMMARY:Wellsboro: History Comes Alive - Harriet Tubman portrayal
DESCRIPTION: A performance by Dr. Daisy Century. \nDr. Century considers Harriet Tubman her role model\, someone who encouraged her to put others first and to lead by example. Like her inspiration\, Daisy grew up on a farm\, has a wonderful singing voice and is a determined woman of conviction: once they start a project\, they must see it through to completion. Harriet Tubman reveals a woman who made up her mind as a young girl that things could be better than they were\, “I had reasoned this out in my mind. There was one of two things I had a right to – liberty or death. If I could not have one\, I would have the other.” Tubman shows us a woman who found freedom for herself and then made sure others were brought to freedom. The brave woman who rescued more than seventy slaves using the Underground Railroad declared\, “I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.” Harriet Tubman takes each and every audience member along for this ride.

SUMMARY:Lancaster: Lecture - "Democratic Faith: From Abolitionism to Civil Rights"
DESCRIPTION:LancasterHistory\, in partnership with Franklin & Marshall College\, will welcome Dr. Melvin L. Rogers of Brown University on Tuesday\, March 24\, at the Barshinger Center for Musical Arts at Franklin & Marshal College\, to discuss the importance of democratic faith in the United States. \nA moral and political vision of democratic faith has guided the struggle for racial justice from the abolitionist movement in the 19th century to the civil rights movement in the 20th century.Important figures such as Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith\, alongside David Walker\, Frederick Douglass\, Anna Julia Cooper\, and Martin Luther King Jr.\, reveal that faith in democracy is not a matter of optimism but of moral courage—the conviction that equality must be enacted in both public institutions and everyday life. Drawing on this inheritance\, Dr. Melvin L. Rogers of Brown University\, considers how such faith can sustain us amid the moral and political crises of our own time. In the year of America’s Semiquincentennial\, these questions lie at the heart of our past\, present\, and future.

SUMMARY:Lancaster: Living the Experience
DESCRIPTION:One of Lancaster County’s most moving and powerfully significant hidden gems\, Living the Experience is a creative\, spiritual\, and interactive historical reenactment of the Underground Railroad\, as it occurred on-site\, at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the City of Lancaster. Living The Experience (LTE) is the first Underground Railroad reenactment in Central Pennsylvania made available with a regular schedule of performances. It has been presented to groups from all over the nation\, and as far away as Australia\, Alaska\, Africa\, and Europe. \nThis Underground Railroad living history program is presented interactively in first person interpretation in an effort to bring alive the people\, places\, and events of Lancaster. The program actively engages its audiences in the learning of Lancaster’s involvement in the Underground Railroad and also its involvement as a free community of Africans. \nThose who attend are provided an honest portrayal of the experiential realities of those involved in the Underground Railroad. From the stories that are told\, the spirituals that are sung\, and in the emotional connections that are felt. People are provided an opportunity to learn and to gain a clearer perspective on the events and the people involved with this “station” on the underground railroad.  Following the reenactment\, a Southern style meal is served and local vendors are on site.
