SUMMARY:Wellsboro: History Comes Alive - Harriet Tubman portrayal
DESCRIPTION: A performance by Dr. Daisy Century. \nDr. Century considers Harriet Tubman her role model\, someone who encouraged her to put others first and to lead by example. Like her inspiration\, Daisy grew up on a farm\, has a wonderful singing voice and is a determined woman of conviction: once they start a project\, they must see it through to completion. Harriet Tubman reveals a woman who made up her mind as a young girl that things could be better than they were\, “I had reasoned this out in my mind. There was one of two things I had a right to – liberty or death. If I could not have one\, I would have the other.” Tubman shows us a woman who found freedom for herself and then made sure others were brought to freedom. The brave woman who rescued more than seventy slaves using the Underground Railroad declared\, “I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.” Harriet Tubman takes each and every audience member along for this ride.

SUMMARY:Lancaster: Lecture - "Democratic Faith: From Abolitionism to Civil Rights"
DESCRIPTION:LancasterHistory\, in partnership with Franklin & Marshall College\, will welcome Dr. Melvin L. Rogers of Brown University on Tuesday\, March 24\, at the Barshinger Center for Musical Arts at Franklin & Marshal College\, to discuss the importance of democratic faith in the United States. \nA moral and political vision of democratic faith has guided the struggle for racial justice from the abolitionist movement in the 19th century to the civil rights movement in the 20th century.Important figures such as Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith\, alongside David Walker\, Frederick Douglass\, Anna Julia Cooper\, and Martin Luther King Jr.\, reveal that faith in democracy is not a matter of optimism but of moral courage—the conviction that equality must be enacted in both public institutions and everyday life. Drawing on this inheritance\, Dr. Melvin L. Rogers of Brown University\, considers how such faith can sustain us amid the moral and political crises of our own time. In the year of America’s Semiquincentennial\, these questions lie at the heart of our past\, present\, and future.

SUMMARY:Lancaster: Living the Experience
DESCRIPTION:One of Lancaster County’s most moving and powerfully significant hidden gems\, Living the Experience is a creative\, spiritual\, and interactive historical reenactment of the Underground Railroad\, as it occurred on-site\, at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the City of Lancaster. Living The Experience (LTE) is the first Underground Railroad reenactment in Central Pennsylvania made available with a regular schedule of performances. It has been presented to groups from all over the nation\, and as far away as Australia\, Alaska\, Africa\, and Europe. \nThis Underground Railroad living history program is presented interactively in first person interpretation in an effort to bring alive the people\, places\, and events of Lancaster. The program actively engages its audiences in the learning of Lancaster’s involvement in the Underground Railroad and also its involvement as a free community of Africans. \nThose who attend are provided an honest portrayal of the experiential realities of those involved in the Underground Railroad. From the stories that are told\, the spirituals that are sung\, and in the emotional connections that are felt. People are provided an opportunity to learn and to gain a clearer perspective on the events and the people involved with this “station” on the underground railroad.  Following the reenactment\, a Southern style meal is served and local vendors are on site.

SUMMARY:Quaker Benevolence and African Genius: Banneker and Cupid Pac
DESCRIPTION:Quaker Benevolence and African Genius: Banneker and Cupid Paca\nfeaturing Dr. Leroy Hopkins\, PhD\nFor generations\, Lancaster County’s history has been told through familiar names and well-documented narratives. Yet some of the most remarkable stories—particularly those centered on African American achievement—have remained overlooked or underrepresented. The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County’s January Speaker Series continues its long-standing tradition of illuminating these stories with a compelling evening lecture by Dr. Leroy Hopkins. \n Dr. Hopkins will present Quaker Benevolence and African Genius: Banneker and Cupid Paca at the historic Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House\, inviting audiences to explore how intellect\, opportunity\, and community intersected in early America—and how Lancaster County played a meaningful role in that story \nThe January presentation will examine two remarkable figures—Benjamin Banneker and Cupid Paca—through the lens of Quaker benevolence and African American intellectual achievement. Banneker\, a self-taught mathematician and astronomer\, is widely recognized for his scientific contributions and his role in surveying the original boundaries of Washington\, D.C. Cupid Paca\, a less familiar but equally compelling figure\, represents the untold brilliance and complexity of African American life in the 18th century. By placing these men within the social and cultural networks of their time\, Dr. Hopkins reveals how education\, patronage\, and moral conviction shaped their opportunities—and their legacies. \n
