SUMMARY:Lancaster: Living the Experience
DESCRIPTION:One of Lancaster County’s most moving and powerfully significant hidden gems\, Living the Experience is a creative\, spiritual\, and interactive historical reenactment of the Underground Railroad\, as it occurred on-site\, at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the City of Lancaster. Living The Experience (LTE) is the first Underground Railroad reenactment in Central Pennsylvania made available with a regular schedule of performances. It has been presented to groups from all over the nation\, and as far away as Australia\, Alaska\, Africa\, and Europe. \nThis Underground Railroad living history program is presented interactively in first person interpretation in an effort to bring alive the people\, places\, and events of Lancaster. The program actively engages its audiences in the learning of Lancaster’s involvement in the Underground Railroad and also its involvement as a free community of Africans. \nThose who attend are provided an honest portrayal of the experiential realities of those involved in the Underground Railroad. From the stories that are told\, the spirituals that are sung\, and in the emotional connections that are felt. People are provided an opportunity to learn and to gain a clearer perspective on the events and the people involved with this “station” on the underground railroad.  Following the reenactment\, a Southern style meal is served and local vendors are on site.

SUMMARY:Quaker Benevolence and African Genius: Banneker and Cupid Pac
DESCRIPTION:Quaker Benevolence and African Genius: Banneker and Cupid Paca\nfeaturing Dr. Leroy Hopkins\, PhD\nFor generations\, Lancaster County’s history has been told through familiar names and well-documented narratives. Yet some of the most remarkable stories—particularly those centered on African American achievement—have remained overlooked or underrepresented. The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County’s January Speaker Series continues its long-standing tradition of illuminating these stories with a compelling evening lecture by Dr. Leroy Hopkins. \n Dr. Hopkins will present Quaker Benevolence and African Genius: Banneker and Cupid Paca at the historic Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House\, inviting audiences to explore how intellect\, opportunity\, and community intersected in early America—and how Lancaster County played a meaningful role in that story \nThe January presentation will examine two remarkable figures—Benjamin Banneker and Cupid Paca—through the lens of Quaker benevolence and African American intellectual achievement. Banneker\, a self-taught mathematician and astronomer\, is widely recognized for his scientific contributions and his role in surveying the original boundaries of Washington\, D.C. Cupid Paca\, a less familiar but equally compelling figure\, represents the untold brilliance and complexity of African American life in the 18th century. By placing these men within the social and cultural networks of their time\, Dr. Hopkins reveals how education\, patronage\, and moral conviction shaped their opportunities—and their legacies. \n

SUMMARY:York County History Storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Our American democracy is worth fighting for\, and it has been since 1776. That struggle has produced heroes\, all worthy. It has spawned foes – some with good intentions\, others certainly not. Historians participating in the York County History Storytellers evening are returning to explore what has worked in York County’s history and those times that we’ve fallen short. As a county\, we can learn from both. \nThe program starts at 6:30 p.m.\, Dec. 11\, and will feature Ben Neely\, June Burk Lloyd\, Samantha Dorm\, Jeri Jones\, Scott Mingus (UGRR) and Stephen H. Smith. Doors open at 5:30 pm for those who wish to explore the museum for free prior to the event. \nHometown History’s Jamie Noerpel and Dominish Marie Miller will host the evening. Jim McClure will preside at the popular “Stump the Historian” segment. \nProgram in collaboration with the York Daily Record and Hometown History
