Walking artist Ken Johnston will provide lantern-making instruction and tell stories about Byberry anti-slavery leader Robert Purvis and the role of lanterns in the Underground Railroad. \nHot drinks will be provided for the historical reenactment and lantern parade\, which will begin at 6:30 and be led by Johnston around the Byberry Friends burial grounds in celebration of Byberry’s Underground Railroad history. \nThe reenactment and parade will mark the 175th anniversary of a meeting in Byberry Hall to protest the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. \n

Stops include Ridgeland Mansion (c. 1762)\, Boelsen Cottage (c. 1684)\, Belmont Mansion (c. 1742)\, and physical remnants of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad\, which was a means of clandestine conveyance for freedom seekers in the mid-19th century.

DESCRIPTION:ALTOONA\, Pa. — Harriett Gaston\, academic adviser at Penn State Altoona and director of the Blair County African American Heritage Project\, will offer the lecture “Freedom Routes: Blair County’s Underground Railroad History” on Tuesday\, Sept. 23\, at 3:30 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge of the Slep Student Center. \nSeptember is International Underground Railroad Month in Pennsylvania. Designated as such by the House of Representatives in July of this year\, its purpose is to highlight and honor the stories of those who actively sought freedom from slavery. \nThe event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Evening on the Summit: The Main Line Canal and Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Allegheny Portage Railroad Series. \nOur final Evening on the Summit program for the season is on Tuesday\, September 16\, at 7:00 p.m. Barbara Zaborowski\, Dean of Library Services and Special Projects at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College\, will speak on the use of the Main Line Canal in supporting Underground Railroad activities. The event will be held in the Visitor Center auditorium. It is free and open to the public. \nSeptember has been designated International Underground Railroad Month in Pennsylvania. House Resolution 275\, passed on June 27\, 2025. This designation recognizes all the Underground Railroad Activity which occurred across the state. \nIn Cambria County\, there are two Underground Railroad designations; a PA Historical Marker in Geistown commemorating the escape of freedom seekers\, Patrick and Abraham and a National Network to Freedom marker in Sandyvale Cemetery where many of Johnstown’s most famous abolitionists are interred.
